Small Caps

Small caps Unicode text for bios, headings, and clean editorial styling.

Small caps render lowercase letters as miniature capitals. It is one of the most legible styles here, and reads as considered rather than decorative.

Where these characters come from

The characters come from the phonetic extensions block, where they represent specific speech sounds. Their visual resemblance to typographic small caps is a side effect.

Worth knowing before you use them

Because the set was designed for phonetics rather than typography, a few letters are missing and fall back to ordinary capitals. The effect is still convincing in most words.

Where this family earns its place

Small caps are the most quietly effective option here. They read as typographic intent rather than decoration, which makes them unusually appropriate in professional contexts where cursive would be wrong. A name or a short heading in small caps looks considered without being hard to read.

The method matters more than the name: it determines whether your letters are replaced, recased or merely marked, and that in turn decides how the result behaves when pasted into a field that validates its input.
