Christmas Symbols

Trees, snowflakes, stars and festive marks.

Christmas Symbols โ€” title card for the events & seasons article on UltraTextGen.

Where these characters come from

Christmas symbols are drawn from two very different eras of Unicode. The snowflakes, stars and the older decorative marks come from Dingbats and Miscellaneous Symbols, encoded decades ago as printer's ornaments. The tree, the figure in the red suit and the wrapped gift are emoji, added much later and drawn by each platform's own artwork.

How reliably they render

The monochrome ornaments are extremely reliable and inherit your text colour, which makes them the better choice inside a bio or a heading. The emoji render everywhere but look different on every platform, so a design that depends on their exact appearance will not survive the trip.

Questions

Which Christmas symbols look best in a bio?
The monochrome snowflakes and stars, because they take your text colour and sit at text size rather than emoji size. A single one at the start or end of a line reads as festive; a row of coloured emoji tends to dominate a short bio.
Will these still display after Christmas?
Yes โ€” nothing expires. That is worth remembering in the other direction, though: seasonal decoration left in a profile in March reads as neglect, so it is worth diarising the removal when you add it.
