Why does fancy text show as boxes?

The empty rectangle means a missing font, not broken text.

Short answer

An empty box means the reader's device has no font covering that character. The text itself is intact — only the drawing step failed. Pick a more widely supported style, or test on a second device.

The short answer

A box (sometimes called tofu) appears when your device has no installed font containing that character. The text itself is fine; only the drawing step failed.

What to do instead

Pick a style from a more widely supported block — bold, italic, small caps and circled letters are the safest — or test the post on a second device before publishing.

Why this comes up

The person seeing boxes and the person who wrote the text are usually on different devices, which makes it hard to diagnose. The author sees their styling perfectly and cannot reproduce the problem; the reader sees a row of rectangles and assumes the post is broken. Both are looking at the same intact text.

How to check quickly

Open the same page on a second device, ideally an older phone. If the characters render there too, the style is well supported and the original report was an unusual device. If they do not, the block you chose has patchy coverage and a more common style — bold, italic, small caps — will reach more readers.
