Math Symbols

Operators, relations, set notation and Greek letters used in maths.

Math Symbols — title card for the symbol & emoji library article on UltraTextGen.

Where these characters come from

Mathematical operators and relations were among the earliest non-Latin additions to Unicode, driven by the need to typeset formulas in plain text. Greek letters are included because they carry conventional meanings in mathematics and physics.

How reliably they render

Basic operators are universally available. Specialised set-theory and logic symbols are well supported on desktop and patchier on mobile.

Questions

Can I use these in plain text instead of an equation editor?
For simple expressions, yes — that is exactly what they were encoded for. Anything involving fractions, matrices or stacked limits needs real layout, because Unicode gives you characters but not two-dimensional positioning.
Why are Greek letters in a maths set?
Because they carry conventional meanings in mathematics and physics. Pi, sigma and delta are used as operators and constants rather than as letters of a language in this context.
