Star Symbols
Stars, sparkles and asterisk forms.

Where these characters come from
Stars and asterisk forms come mainly from Dingbats, a block derived from a commercial typeface of printer's ornaments. That commercial origin is why so many near-identical variants exist — they were distinct pieces of type rather than distinct meanings.
How reliably they render
The plain outlined and filled stars are very widely supported. Ornate multi-pointed variants are less so, and some render as colour emoji on certain platforms rather than as monochrome glyphs.
Questions
Why do some stars appear in colour?
Several star characters have emoji presentation by default, so the platform draws its own coloured artwork rather than a monochrome glyph. The outlined and filled stars from the older blocks stay monochrome and take your text colour.
Which star should I use as a rating?
The plain filled and outlined stars are the conventional pair, because they read clearly at small sizes and are universally supported. Add a text label alongside, since a screen reader announces the character name rather than a score.
